This is Vichitta and she belongs to one of the 6 different hill-tribes called Lahu that live in the hills in northern part of Thailand.
The hill tribe peoples of Thailand are primarily Burmese migrants who inhabit the remote hilly forests of the Thai-Burma-Laos triangle border. Composed of 6 different ethnic groups each with its own language and culture and recognisable by its colourful traditional dress. The Akha, Karen, Lahu, Lisu, Mien and Mon peoples are hard-working and sincere people and believe in the fruits of honesty and a teachable mind.
All these hill-tribes left their home-country Burma and fled into thick jungle-Thai soil because of the cruel and corrupted Burmese military government which got armies everywhere in cites and villages. The armies destroy and burn villages, crops fields,and kill lots of people. They took all their belongs; cattles, rice and money.
They got a license to rape girls and women in the open air. The victims are being raped in front of their families, relatives and villagers. This is much more than an human being can bear.
They left all these behind in agony and came into Thai soil called Thailand in search of a new peaceful life.
Even so, the plight of these people is manifold and worsening. Originally, the hill-tribe communities survived through the production of opium and then logging, both of which were understandably halted by the Thai government along with their traditional slash and burn farming techniques. Many have been left with no trade options and infertile land on which to grow substandard crops. Their staple food is rice, roots, yams and a few vegetables but many are having to survive on a diet of rice and chilli leading to serious cases of disease and malnutrition.
There are about 100 NGOs( non-government organizations) in the area alone. All these NGOs collects funds and donations by using hill-tribes' names. In fact all these NGOs are preying and are making money on hill-tribes. Most of the money they collect spend on cars, truck, building, computers and staffs. They hardly come up to the hills to visit hill-tribes. They all sit back and relux and enjoying the funds in city in airconditioning rooms.
As giving free medical treatments to the hill-tribes, I move from village to village in 60 villages in the hills and I don't remember if I ever come across other NGOs that collect funds and donations on behalf of hill-tribes.
Because of all these corruptions and unhuman, the hill-tribes are getting poorer and poorer day by day.
Today, oh behalf of this little girl, Vichitta, we would love to say a big thanks to you, Bernice. You did a great change and made a big different to a poor girl Vichitta. She acknowledges and accepts you as her own mother who got raped and killed in the hands of the cruel and unhuman army came alive to take her in her hands. We, Dr. David and Vichitta, just can't find a word that can express our great gratitude and thankfulness to you.
